Monteverde is an area of Costa Rica in the province of Puntarenas, known for its cloud forest, which has become a major tourist attraction. Due to its high altitude (around 1440 m above sea level), Monteverde is always surrounded by clouds that provide great humidity. This fog-like moisture that is picked up by the tree branches, supports a complex and rich ecosystem. It is known as the site with the largest number of orchid species in the world (a total of 500). There are also 60 species of amphibians (including the extinct golden toad), 400 species of birds (including the most beautiful quetzal) and 100 species of mammals (such as the tapir).

The Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve is a private reserve that was created in 1972 for scientific purposes and has 10,500 hectares. Later, other private reserves were created, such as Santa Elena Reseve 1989, the Children’s Eternal Forest and Curi-Cancha. Monteverde is considered one of the Seven Wonders of Costa Rica by popular vote, and National Geographic called it “the jewel of the crown of the cloud forest reserves.”
